TDHS Historian Bob Guy to speak on the life of the Marquis de Lafayette
April 27, 2025, at 7 p.m. (Central Time) via Zoom
TDHS is pleased to announce that our esteemed historian, Bob Guy, will give a special presentation on the Marquis de Lafayette during a Zoom meeting on Sunday, April 27, 2025, at 7 p.m. Central Time. A link to the meeting will be emailed to all TDHS members a few days ahead of the meeting.
Most of us have a vague idea of the contributions made by the Marquis de Lafayette in the American Revolutionary War, but he did much more in his lifetime to champion the right of the people to be free of tyranny and to promote liberty. After our revolution, he returned to France and continued making history during the French Revolution of 1789 and the many tumultuous events before and after that. His actions and convictions often put him in extreme danger. He was even imprisoned in Austria for several years. He survived due to his tenacity and support from his family and allies both in Europe and America. He has been called a Hero of Two Worlds.
When he returned to the U.S. for his “farewell tour” or “grand tour” in 1824-1825, America was preparing to celebrate its 50th birthday. Crowds of adoring and grateful citizens turned out to greet him at every stop. Lafayette included Nashville as one of his stops. On May 4, 1825, a banquet was given in his honor at which the attendees lifted their glasses in a toast to then 78-year-old Timothy Demonbreun. Newspaper accounts of the festivities reported that the toast was made by Col. Andrew Hynes or Haynes who recognized Timothy as the patriarch of Tennessee and the first white man to settle in our (or the) country.
Non-members of TDHS are welcome to attend, but will need to email claudia_kovar@hotmail.com prior to April 24, 2025, to get the zoom link.
Please put this event on your calendars and join us for an extremely enlightening and enjoyable evening.
Members of the Timothy Demonbreun Heritage Society have been invited to participate in a special event at the Hermitage, Andrew Jackson’s historic home in Nashville, on Saturday, May 3, 2025.
The event, called “Lafayette at the Hermitage,” is part of the American Friends of Lafayette’s commemoration of the Revolutionary War general’s 1825 visit to Nashville that was part of his multi-state Farewell Tour that began in 1824. The Hermitage has planned a day full of historic activities, including an opening balcony talk, lectures on Lafayette’s significance, historic games and more.
TDHS will have a booth or table where members will be available to answer questions about Timothy’s role in the history of Tennessee, distribute information about the Society and assist people who might have questions about their own connection to Timothy.
The Hermitage event runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 3, 2025. The usual admission costs charged by the Hermitage will apply.
For more information or to offer to help man the table, please contact Claudia Kovar at claudia_kovar@hotmail.com with any questions.
TDHS Members!
Our reunion in Bardstown, KY, this July is coming together. TDHS vice president Connie Thomas has been working hard to put together the details for what promises to be a memorable event.
The attached flyer contains information about the activities that the group will do together as well as optional activities that people can do on their own.
A more detailed itinerary is being prepared and will be sent to those who contact Connie saying they are interested in coming.
Please note that each participant will be paying their own admission fees, meal costs (except for the dinner that Connie and Keith are hosting) and hotel costs.
It is important to contact Connie if you are interested in attending. Her contact information is at the bottom of the attached flyer. We have arranged for a group discount for a limited number of rooms at the Bardstown La Quinta Inn and Suites. Connie will send the link for the group rate reservation to those who contact her and plan to stay at the hotel.
I hope many of you will be able to come. It is always wonderful to connect with each other in person. Plus we will see many very interesting historic places where people who had an impact on Timothy lived or gathered.
Best wishes to you all,
Claudia Kovar
President
